As the former distributor for Heros Toys in the USA, we have some inventory that we are still selling. Occassionally we receive questions from consumers and stores regarding safety, paints, formaldehyde, etc. We will try to answer these questions here:
Question: What kinds of paints & dyes are used on the HEROS TOYS.
Answer: The paints are based on WATER-COLORS, and do not contain heavy-metals, phtalate or any other forbidden elements.
All dyed wooden toys are subjected to a chemical saliva and sweat test. Chemical substances as they are contained in human saliva and sweat, act in a humid oven climate on the dyed wood surface for several hours. In that connection, the dye must not come off to the test stripes when such stripes are drawn away.
If, however, the dyed surface is exposed to mechanical impacts (e.g. gnawing, nibbling, scraping as for instance during teeth growth), then wooden toys cannot be prevented from exhibiting traces caused by such scratching and gnawing, thus releasing dye particles as well. Such release, however, is absolutely harmless, as the dyes applied are subjected to rigorous tests themselves.
For all wooden toy paints pigments are used that, again, clearly remain under the yet very low limit values set forth in the EN71 EUROPEAN STANDARD and that can be described as heavy metal-free. Every production batch is tested at the paint manufacturer itself and certified as an EN71 paint. Such paints are known as toy paints and absolutely harmless to health, even in case of being swallowed.
Question: What type of wood is used? Is the wood from "sustainable" forests?
Answer: The wooden material used is BEECH & MAPLE hardwoods. These are grown & harvested in the woods of South Germany as well as Austria (PEFC & FSC-certified forests - most are government owned). MDF (middle density fibreboard) is also used, as well as PLYWOOD, which is has the "E1"-certification for testing chemical-elements etc.
Question: Is formadehyde found in your products?
Answer: There is absolutely no FORMALDEHYDE, PCB or any other "wood-protection"-chemicals, because Heros get the logs from the woods right after being cut and the wood is sawed & stocked locally on the Heros premises. Also the glue or any other chemical help-materials are conform to the latest European toy-safety regulations.
